I visited the family circus at the weekend to see the new 2009 line-up. This act was probably one of my faves. It was so beautiful and graceful.
It’s called a ‘strap act’ and I’ve witnessed first hand how difficult it is to learn – those straps are seriously hard on the skin. We had a couple of acrobats working with the circus a few years ago and one of them, Vladi if I remember right, decided he wanted to learn how to do it.
Every day, he would go out and paractice. That evening, his arms would be bloodied and bandaged from where the hard strap and rubbed him raw. You basically had to just keep going out there and doing it over and over until your skin toughened up. Pretty tough going for something that looks so pretty.
A few more arial shots below. These are from the ‘silks act’, performed solo. This is another gorgeously graceful act, and very popular in European circuses. In fact, you can bet any circus girl worth her salt has given it a go at some stage (that doesn’t mean it’s easy though!).
