Aaagh, where did Monday go?! Anyway, this is what we got up to at the weekend:
Friday: Headed out Swords way to visit the circus and celebrate my auntie Jackie’s birthday. Because the show only finished at 9.30-9.45pm, we went to the nearest eatery – the Coachman’s Inn on the Airport Rd. The food was tasty enough, of the old school kiev/salmon encroute/steak variety, but the service was Fawlty Towers-esque. The red wine we first received was WOEFUL, and nothing near the wine list’s description. Efforts to return it proved futile – none of the staff spoke fluent English so there was a lot of misunderstanding going on, along the lines of:
Us: Sorry, this wine is really awful, could we please order another?
Waitress: The wine is corked, yes?
Us: No, no, it’s not, it just tastes really bad, nothing like described.
Waitress: But is corked , yes?
This goes on and on, until my Nanny gets frustrated and interjects: “It can’t be corked, it’s a screw top!” which breaks the mounting tension and gets us all laughing.
(However, we have since found out that wines of the screw top variety can, in fact, be corked…)
Now, nobody at the table had a fancy, super-refined palette but the stuff really was vile so we asked if a supervisor would mind tasting it. The waitress returns and says that the supervisor is pregnant, so can’t. We ask for a manager, but he/she is off-duty. While all this is going on, a different waitress approaches and reminds us that we have to order our food in the next five minutes as the kitchen is about to close…
On to Saturay: After the incredibly disappointing Ireland-Italy game (more on this from a disgruntled Eoghan), we had some peeps over for a poker night, which was great craic. Given that buy-ins were only €10 and booze came from our local supermarket, it’s a very cheap and fun way to spend a Saturday night.
Sunday: Birthday cake and tea at Eoghan’s as we celebrated his mum’s birthday. The rest of the day was a blur of Sunday papers, tea, more papers and even more tea…
Weekend highlight: Coming out on top at poker, woohoo!
Weekend lowlight: My 30-day Adobe Photoshop CS3 trial coming to an end, boohoo!
